FITGER’S PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
In 2017, NORDIC removed and disposed of the existing pedestrian bridge, repaired existing support beams and concrete piers, and installed cast new concrete stair support on the ramp. NORDIC fabricated, offsite, new 30’ long, 6’ wide bridge with all steel members and new railings to meet new code requirements as well as primed and painted. Once complete, the bridge was installed with a crane during night hours to not interfere with business activities.
HARRISON PARK IMPROVEMENTS
NORDIC Group, Inc. completed construction of park improvements for Harrison Park in Duluth, MN, including a new walkway connection through the park, a concrete patio off the back door of the community building with an ADA-compliant ramp entrance, site lighting, landscape trees, and the removal of an abandoned tennis court and fence.
KADUNCE RIVER
NORDIC Group performed river and trail restorations as well as in-stream habitat enhancements for trout and steelhead along roughly 1,500 feet of the Kadunce River. NORDIC created fish habitat structures out of rocks, logs and other habitable structures in the stream bed and riverbanks. Because this project had challenging access, NORDIC utilized specialty equipment to work in and along the confined riverbed to minimize damage to other critical natural features. NORDIC was selected by the MN Trout Unlimited and the MnDNR staff as a qualified Stream Habitat and Excavation Contractor to complete this critical habitat restoration project.
LAKE COUNTY BRIDGE REPAIRS
NORDIC Group, Inc. completed four (4) Lake County Bridge Repairs for the Silver Creek Township. NORDIC dug out of the back of the east and west abutment, drove approx. 10’ of sheet pile to both the east and west side, and backfilled with compaction to prevent future scouring and soil loss.
LOST LAND LAKE BOAT LAUNCH REPAIRS
NORDIC Group, Inc. completed demolition to an existing concrete boat launch and dock shore interface in Sawyer County. Both the concrete boat launch and the dock shore interface were replaced as well as fabrication and installation completed for a new floating boarding dock.
LOWER STEWART RIVER REPAIRS
Nordic Group was selected by the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) as a qualified stream restoration contractor to repair damages from the flood of 2018.
MISSION CREEK STREAM RESTORATION
Nordic Group was selected by the St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to complete this challenging stream restoration project located near the Neighborhood of Fond du Lac in the City of Duluth. This project was partially funded by the MnDNR. The project included channel excavation, material harvesting, stream re-alignment, temporary stream diversion, installation of streambed wood and rock habitat structures, grading of flood plain, restoration of a small tributary channel and the removal of a debris catcher. Work also included the reestablishment of native trees, shrubs, and grasses as well as the restoration of key trails.
NORTH SHORE SHORELINE RESTORATION
Nordic Group, Inc. teamed with sister company, AMI Consulting Engineers (AMI), to construct shoreline restorations for a North Shore Residential Owner. AMI performed engineering design, civil survey, soils analysis and permitting along the Lake Superior Shoreline in Knife River, MN. This shoreline was previously a failing clay bluff that was over time being washed away into Lake Superior due to wave action and high lake levels causing shoreline erosion.
PARK CREEK POND
In 2017, NORDIC Group installed concrete stairs, retaining walls and a wooden pavilion along the edge of Park Creek Pond in Solon Springs.
PIER B RESORT & HOTEL
NORDIC Group, Inc. provided underwater inspections, demolition, earthwork, construction oversight/inspection, and capping of contaminated soil. Capping of legacy contaminants in Slip 2 involved the development of a public and private partnership that included the developer, the MPCA, Army Corps of Engineers and the Minnesota MDNR. The capping project placed a minimum of 2.8 feet of clean dredge sediments across the 2+ acre slip. The dredge material used was pre-screened for structural and chemical characteristics and obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers dredging operations. An additional 7 feet of dredge material was placed above the cap to provide structural support to the aging pier walls and to provide protected shallow water habitat.
PIER B RETRACTABLE BRIDGE
This retracting bridge was required to maintain boat access to the industrial slip where the developer constructed a transient marina offering water access to the hotel and restaurant guests. This unique design utilizes a series of large roller assemblies and steel frames to encapsulate the bridge rails much like a rollercoaster. All the steel support wheels are fully adjustable to fine tune the position and operation of the bridge.
POPLAR RIVER TRIBUTARY RESTORATION
Nordic Group was selected by the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) as a qualified stream restoration contractor. NORDIC worked directly with an onsite engineer from the Cook Co. SWCD. NORDIC utilized specialty equipment to work in and along the confined riverbed to minimize damage to other critical natural features. This project involved creating 150 boulder step pools and over 180 log step pools in a tributary for the Poplar River. NORDIC created these pools with rock and wood materials found within the project site. Work created additional fish habitat and provided better sediment control, as well as created new sloped channels to the stream. Vegetation was reestablished using natural area planting.
PORT OF LAFITO
NORDIC Group was awarded a contract by Seaboard Marine to repair and complete construction at their Port Lafito shipping facility. The project was completed in three phases, starting with emergency seawall repairs. This phase included fabrication of plate patches, underwater welding and burning, cement/grouting operations and rigging/ crane operations.
TOWER HARBOR TRAIL
NORDIC Group was selected to complete the Tower Harbor Trail project located in Tower, MN. The trail project is part of the City of Tower's proposed marine development on the west side of the city limits. The completed development will include a new hotel and associated retail buildings.
